Helen has been married to Florida Medical Clinic Orthopaedic Surgeon, Steve, for 23 years. They have two daughters in college. Living in Tampa and calling it home for 20 years, she has always been actively involved in various charitable organizations. Helen dedicates many hands-on volunteer hours to various organizations, whether it was at her children’s school when they were young, or such organizations as Hope Children’s Home, Metropolitan Ministries and LAMPLighters. She has served on the board of Hillsborough County Medical Association Alliance and for many years served on the Starlight Ball committee of University Community Hospital’s Foundation, where she chaired the Starlight Ball in 1995. Most recently she was the co-chair of “Lights, Fashion & Hope”, LAMPLighters’ annual event to raise awareness and funds for Metropolitan Ministries and the Joshua House in Tampa.
Her favorite Foundation of Caring project is “Paint Your Heart Out Tampa”, where, for the first time this year, Florida Medical Clinic employees formed “Team FMC” to paint a home for an elderly, fixed income Tampa resident. “The enthusiasm felt on that Saturday morning in April was overwhelming! Our employees came together from different Tampa offices and worked so hard to make Ms. McCarthurs’ home just beautiful, she was thrilled! Everybody can’t wait to paint another home next year!” As a board member, she is also the project leader for the Joshua House, a therapeutic shelter for abused, abandoned and neglected children in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. She will also be taking over the Morning Star project in the fall.
